The end of an amazing journey!

Well our adventure ends today :o( Wally tried to get us to stay another night but we figured we better get back to our furry babies! We both are not looking forward to returning back to the real world of work, school, etc…but we do miss our puppies to pieces!

You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can never take Texas out of the girl!

Mile 4,804: Texas State Line!

Back in the mighty state!

On our way home we stopped by the Cadillac Ranch and then went grab some grub at the Big Texan! Brandon was up for the 72oz steak challenge - but I told him I did not want to be stuck with him in an enclosed moving vehicle for 3 hours after that!

What an amazing trip this has been! Although we are both worn out from being on the go – we both had the best time and had the opportunity to travel and see so many amazing things! In our 13 days on the road we….

Traveled through 10 states
Clocked in a total of 5,181 miles
Filled up the truck with 274.8 gallons of gas
Collected 32 stickers for the beer fridge outside
Came home with a truck covered in bug guts, a nice big rock ding in the windshield and a ton of good memories!

TRIP SUMMARY

Day 13: Creede, CO to Midland, TX

Weather: Cool and then hot (boiling) as we got closer to Midland!

Jess’ Jibberish & Bran’s Babbles – some observations:

As you travel up the west coast of the country they are very environmentally conscious! It is so great! They recycle everything – maybe some areas should take some notes - like TEXAS!
Bathroom cleanliness also gets better as you travel the coast, but becomes not so good once you get into Colorado and start traveling back south.
On the coast all bathrooms have toilet protectors and are very clean!
Dyson hand dryers in the bathroom are amazing – that thing can dry your hands in 2 seconds flat! We only saw these along the west coast!
Wyoming came out on top with the cheapest gas!
Washington above all was our favorite state - I forgot I even had EPP! But was very quickly reminded of it once we got back into Texas and got out at the Cadillac Ranch :o(

Happy Independence Day! We are so thankful for the men and women who fight to keep this country free! Make sure you thank and hug a veteran today! We were lucky enough to spend this 4^th of July with the great people of Creede (along with 10,000 other visitors!) We started the day with the 4^th of July parade – it was great! Best parade I have seen and it was actually a really big parade for a town whose population is 500!

After the parade we strolled the streets of Creede to check out the stores before we were to meet Wally at Kip’s Grill. What a crazy fun place! We had the best time at Kip’s! Drank some good margaritas, ate some elk burgers, listened to a great live band from Alabama, and made lots of new friends! We were at Kip’s all day celebrating and didn’t leave until after the fireworks show at dark thirty! The great thing about Creede is you can walk everywhere to get to where you are going…the Post house is just a few steps from Kip’s – which is handy dandy!

Puttering into Colorado.....

We are pooped today! Our tuck is getting pretty full of stuff and we have one more adventure to Creede, Colorado! The Post's were nice enough to let us stay at their house while in Creede. We will travel across the entire state of Wyoming today before we enter into Colorado. We got into Creede pretty late due to the never-ending construction in Wyoming with travel speeds of 45-50 miles per hour!

These my friends are what are known as "snow fences." You see them all along the highway in Wyoming and Colorado. There purpose in life is to help block and keep the butt-load of snow this area gets off the highways!

Day 11: Jackson, WY to Creede, CO

Weather: Pleasant – in the 60’s

The only radio stations that come in clearly and perfect are tejano stations – why is this? What this means...Brandon got to listen to me sing for a long time on this leg of the trip!
Cell phone service or internet does not exist in the Creede, Colorado area!

Day 10: Here Bear! Moooooooose!

After getting some rest we woke up to prepare for our 300-mile loop through the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone! We had a lot of ground to cover in a day! Before heading the National Parks we had breakfast in Jackson Hole at a great little restaurant and then made our way around this cute little town! I loved it!

We then made our way down the road to see the Grand Tetons. They are massive and awesome! Pictures just don’t do it justice!

Then into Yellowstone we went! I was on a serious mission to takes some pictures of wildlife. I especially wanted to see a moose and grizzly! Brandon really wanted to see a grizzly too! As we entered into the park I spotted the first animal -a little black bear just hanging out! He was so cute! We saw several animals during our trip:

I spotted the first wildlife! This little black bear!

It is just amazing how big some of these animals are. It is also equally amazing how stupid people are and how they get by with not getting killed by these wild creatures! ATTENTION: BISON ARE NOT LIKE COWS! THEY WILL CHARGE AT YOU AND CAN ACTUALLY RUN FAST! It was incredible to see Yellowstone and all of the wildlife just doing their thing. It was amazing to see what they call a “stream” (otherwise known as a raging river)! There was also a ton of snow! It was pretty chilly at the top :o)

If you didn't already know....Yellowstone National Park if a volcano! If that isn't grand enough, Yellowstone is just the top/opening of the volcano! Insane huh! Scientists believe that this volcano will erupt again within the next 100 years! (Hope I'm not visiting!) When it does erupt we will see ash from this volcano all the way in Midland, Texas! Just some food for thought...

We also were able to go and see the famous Druid Wolf Pack area of the park and where their dens were. The story of that wolf pack is amazing – if you do not know it you should definitely read about it. Brandon actually had the opportunity of working with the biologist who studies this pack of wolves within the park. So amazing at the power that one animal can have!

Although I was a little sad though that we never saw a Moose or Grizzly :o( the experience of Yellowstone is remarkable, and almost overwhelming because of everything it encompasses! You could never experience everything that Yellowstone offers in this lifetime…such a wonderful place! We will definitely be going back!

Mile 3653: Bison Jam!

This my friends is what you call a bison jam....when you enter Yellowstone you are at the mercy of the animals! At this time 20 bison thought they needed to cross the road!

The ground at this site is so hot and acidic that if you step on it it will melt the sole of your shoe!

Upon entering Yellowstone there is a sign warning you not to "feed or molest the animals"….hmmmm

Standing in the middle of grizzly bear country is a little unsettling when it is dark outside...you can’t really see, and there are signs surrounding you warning you about the bears!

Today was a busy day! We traveled through 4 states…one of them twice! We made our travels across Washington and into Idaho and then Idaho to Montana, then back into Idaho and to Wyoming! Oh my goodness!

Northwestern Washington is nothing like the northeastern part – it looks like West Texas! It is flat with lots of farmland. There was really nothing spectacular about Idaho. We did stop and eat at Post Falls. I really wanted to go somewhere to eat french fries since we were in Idaho – but we were not able to find a place that would serve such a food item that was not also doubling as a strip club.

Montana was really beautiful! But they do get points deducted for not making their state line sign road trip/photograph friendly! We had dinner in Montana at a local restaurant in Beaverhead County and it was the best hamburger we have ever had! So yummy! So Montana you get your deducted points back!

The in order to get to Jackson Hole, Wyoming we had to enter into the state of Idaho AGAIN (still no french fries)! We made it into Wyoming late – we were both sooooo tired! Due to all the wildlife we had to drive a little slower than we would have liked to. We saw lots of deer! We got out to take pictures of the Wyoming state line sign - but due to it being pitch black it made it a little difficult. The pitch blackness all gave me the willies because I could not see what wildlife (aka bears) was going to come up behind and get me!

Day 9: Seattle, WA to Jackson, WY

Weather: Great! Clear and cool with highs in upper 60’s, low 70’s

The Hawkins take over Seattle!

We got some good rest last night – it was much needed! Driving makes you tired! Bran’s tummy seemed to be a little better, so we headed out into downtown Seattle. We went down to the historic district and went through a couple of places – then made our way up by the water.

After shopping a little more we headed into the Crab Pot to get our seafood fix – and boy did we! This restaurant is so nifty – you order “sea fests” and they come and lay down butcher-like paper on your table and dump and entire bucket of seafood on top of it. They hand you a wooden board and a mallet and let you have at it! It was sooooo yummy! Our bucket of seafood goodness included shrimp, mussels, oysters, crab, salmon, halibut, clams, potatoes and corn. Yeah we killed it! It was soooo good!

After filling our tummy’s with seafood goodness we headed to do the Duck tour of Seattle. It was a blast!! If you have never heard of the Duck Tours it is a WWII Amphibious craft that takes you on a land tour through the city of Seattle and then into the water you go! Our guide was Captain Chip Ahoy and he was a hoot! The extravaganza included duckbill noisemakers, jammin’ songs, dancing, and craziness! Some of the things we saw on our tour:

See the house boat with the black front porch awning...it is the smallest house boat on the water. It is 254 sq ft, costs, costs $900 to rent, and has over a 2 year waiting list!

After the crazy duck ride we were going to take the Underground tour of Seattle – but were not going to have enough time, so we made our way back down to Pike’s Place again for some goodies and most importantly cherries! I also had to stop at the original Starbucks! I bet you did not know that the original Starbucks did not serve brewed coffee…just the coffee beans. The creator of Starbucks did not think people would pay $4 for a cup of coffee – boy was he wrong!

We then made our way over to West Seattle to meet up with some friends to eat dinner at ___ - it was so yummy too! The atmosphere was so homey and family like. We were bummed that our friends Mike and Angie were not going to be able to join us for dinner due to Mike being under the weather, but much to our surprise Angie came though the door of the restaurant with a bag full of goodies! You guys are the greatest (and the chocolate rocked!). Craig, our other friend we met for dinner drove us around to some areas of West Seattle after dinner and then back to our hotel. Thanks Craig you rock!

It was a busy day! We have a long drive tomorrow – thank goodness we are not sleepless in Seattle :o)

Day 8: Seattle, WA

Weather: Overcast & cool – low 60’s

Customer service still exists in this part of the country! Everyone is so nice and will go out of their way to make sure you are taken care of
At Starbucks you have to stand in a line in order to get in line to order
Brandon’s new career – window washing while wearing a kilt (this is an actual business)
The sun rises at the butt crack of dawn 4:30am, and does not fully set until after 10pm

We headed out of Oregon today :o( We fell in L-O-V-E with the city of Portland! We stopped for one more cup of Stumptown coffee before heading out to Seattle, Washington!

Mile 2512: Washington State Line

Hello Washington!

The drive to Seattle is only about 3 hours and it is full of amazing views! Driving into Seattle was just as beautiful – full of mountains, water and trees! I will say though – the streets of Seattle are LOCO! So many one ways and the streets are narrow! We made it to our hotel and unloaded everything. We had the best view of the city from our room and were just right in the middle of almost everything!

By this point we were both starving so we made our way down the streets of Seattle and found an awesome pub/restaurant called Fado. Such a cool atmosphere and the nicest and most awesome people worked there! The food was out of this world!

After getting some grub we made our way to get our first look at Pike’s Place Market. There are so many things to look at and buy! Pike Place is one of the oldest running markets - dating back to 1907!

We walked through parts of the market and then headed back to the hotel, but not before a quick stop for some of the pink stuff – Pepto! Brandon’s belly was not feeling so good…may have been something to do with the beer/coffee diet….

Day 7: Portland, OR to Seattle, WA

Weather: Cloudy with some sprinkles – high 50’s, low 60’s

Jess’ Jibberish & Bran’s Babbles:

Props to the state of Washington! They take care of their travelers with roadside rest stop safety breaks – free coffee/water and snacks at all rest stops!
Sprint GPS does not know where in the heck it is going in Seattle!
We felt the burn! Those Seattle streets are steep – ok going down, but going up was a workout!
That wasn’t sneaky try that again – to all the drug dealer handoffs we saw take place in front of us!

The Portland Trend

We were up and at ‘em early this morning to prepare to Brandon’s presentation and make our way to Portland University! What a beautiful campus! We spent the morning listening to presentations – Brandon was in charge of moderating a few of them. Dr Post and Brandon did excellent on their presentation! He makes me so proud :o)

Before leaving campus we headed to eat lunch with Dr Post at one of the local pub/lunch spots! Beer here is so good! Some good IPA if you are a liker of this type of beer! In Portland, they also give you adult happy meal toys! :o)

After lunch we headed back to the hotel for a little nap before hitting downtown for a little Beervana action! Oregon is home to over 90 breweries! Out of those 90, 30 are in Portland! Just for comparison purposes, Texas only has 25! Crazy! Dinner at the pub was great and so was the brew! Brandon and I realized as we sat down for dinner that night that all we had had to drink at this point in the day was coffee…beer…more coffee…beer! I see a trend! In order to keep the trend going we stopped at Stumptown for coffee – it was sooooo good!

Portland definitely made up for the beginning of the state! Everyone is so nice and laid back! The city has a wonderful vibe that is not too overwhelming – actually it is somewhat calm. The Hawkins officially heart Portland!

Day 6: Portland, OR

Weather: Cloudy, misty, 60’s….so nice!

When in Oregon– there is a law that does not allow you to put gas in your own car – they pump it for you!
The beer and coffee make you giggly!
Because in Texas the crosswalks are not used much and in Portland they are - Brandon almost ran over a few pedestrians! Sorry!

Ocean, Big Trees & Banjos

Today was another long day of traveling in the car…but we were able to stop at so many neat places on the highway! We took the infamous 101 through the Redwoods. What an amazing drive! Those things are HUGE!!! We also got our first look at the Pacific Ocean today and it was so beautiful! At some point of the drive we couldn’t tell if it was the edge of the world or the ocean…the way the clouds sit on top of the ocean plays tricks on your mind!

Entering Oregon was another story…I am not thrilled at this point with the state of Oregon! We seriously felt like we were in a scene in the movie Deliverance. Is that a banjo I hear....???!!

As we made our way further into the state it got a little better – but I am keeping my fingers crossed that Portland will help the state out a bit!

It rained on us almost the entire time driving in Oregon…I almost forgot what that stuff was! We headed to our hotel to get some rest – we were tired after this drive! We have an early start in the morning - Brandon has his presentation for the American and Australian Society of Mammologists. I am really excited to get to see him in his realm of people! Goodnight until tomorrow!

Vino!

Today was vino day! We were so excited about getting to go to the wine country and it did not disappoint! We chose to go and tour the Castello di Amorosa winery. This place was just breathtaking, amazing, stunning, and wonderful! Definitely a treat! The story behind the castle was so interesting! Check it out by clicking HERE. Another cool fact about the winery is that multiple Disney movies were filmed at the castle – too cool! Our tour guy Joe was hilarious and taught us both so much! We got to try so many different wines and they were all so yummy! Another fact - the wine from this winery is only sold at the winery – not distributed anywhere else… so of course we had to buy some bottles to bring home!

After the tour and some purchasing we walked around outside of the castle to take some pictures and then headed back into Napa for a drink before driving back to Benicia for dinner. After dinner we strolled the city before heading to bed to get an early start the next morning.

Best day yet! If nursing does not work out I am going to be a cave rat and work with wine barrels - it is perfect working conditions for me!

Unless you want to buy a 300,000 barrel of wine DO NOT touch or remove the Dixie Cup or candle out of the wine barrel. This is one of them....

Big RED Bridge

After getting a good nights sleep in our little historic bed and breakfast we crossed the street and got the best cup ‘o joe we have ever had!! We walked the streets of Benicia before heading out to do other activities. What a cute city Benicia is! It is filled with cafes, boutiques, and the best part puppies! This city loves its dogs! Everyone brings there dog with them everywhere! Even the businesses put water bowls out for all the furry visitors! We loved it – made us miss our pups!

After strolling the streets we crossed the bridge to San Francisco! Benecia is just a hop, skip, and a jump to San Fran! Now while we are talking about crossing the bridge lets take a minute to focus on the Cali tolls…this state charges $5 when you use a toll! REALLY!?!?! So stupid! And what makes this $5 charge even more painful to throw out your drivers side window is that roads in Cali are HORRIBLE! Just a tip Cali – use some of this money to work on your roadways!

Ok, back to San Fran…what a bumpin’ city! It was a little too populated and congested for Brandon’s liking, and to top it off we happened to cross the bridge on the weekend of the gay pride parade. THERE WERE A KAZILLION PEOPLE THERE!!!

We finally found a parking spot and made our way up to the piers – but not before we each got a pair of Tom’s shoes! Love them! We ventured into some more of the shops and then headed out to take a tour of the bay area, which took us under the Golden Gate and by Alcatraz! The Golden Gate was remarkable – even though it was kind of cloudy and I had a hard time getting a good picture- it was magical nonetheless! We were not able to take a tour of Alcatraz like we wanted, but I tell you just being in the presence of that place gives you an eerie feeling! On our boat tour we even had a seagull that flew above us the entire time trying to eat our food! It was hilarious! And boy it was also COLD! This Texas girl had to put some layers on! Brandon was even a little chilly!

After the boat tour we headed to some more shops and then to Bubba Gump’s to eat! It was YUMMY and our waitress was the bomb! It was so great to get some good seafood! Of course before leaving we had to pick up some Bubba Gump gear – Forrest G is my man!

After filling our bellies with yummy seafood we drove back across the bridge (but not after paying another $5 toll fee) and headed back to Benicia for some zzzzz’s! It was a good day!

In Benecia there are dental offices EVERYWHERE! So these people either have really bad teeth or the best lookin’ teeth in the nation! Valum, is the conversation of choice with the crazy older women – apparently they all take it and LOVE it (I think they might even share…)

Watching Chinese people do a Chinese fire drill while waiting in traffic is pretty much the funniest thing ever. The Chinese also like to bring along puppies to the city…

And just because we were feeling a little crazy we decided to buy a boat…bet you can’t guess which one! Just kidding – I wish we could buy a boat!

On the road again...

We got some good zzz's under our belt and went and took a stroll around our hotel in Yuma before heading out again! This was a long day in the car! Southern California is not what we expected….it is not so pretty! When you first enter the state it is just miles upon miles of sand dunes! LA traffic was ridonculous! I mean SERIOUSLY RIDONCULOUS! It was not until we finally got out of that mess and entered the central part of the state, the the states beauty began to shine through! Vineyards as far as the eye can see, water everywhere, and they even have pump jacks! There was not much on the highway at this point of our journey and of course we were starving! Then out of the middle of nowhere a vision came…it was Harris Ranch! Just this amazing place to stay, hang out, and eat and it was literally in the middle of nowhere! The food was some of the best food we have ever had – and not just because we were starving!

After filling our bellies it was on the road until we made it to our little quaint historic hotel in Benicia, CA. The Union Hotel dates back to the 1800’s and has housed many famous residents: Ronald Reagan, Ulysses S. Grant, and Humphrey Bogart just to name a few! It was an amazing place! You could just feel the history when you walked in….from the old squeaky wood floors, to the décor, and even the smell! Wondermus! This city was awesome - so if you ever make your way into Cali this is the place to be! Hope this bed is comfy - we are two tired peeps!

Vacation officially started today! This trip will mark our first REAL vacation as a married couple!! Last year we were scheduled to take our Alaskan cruise, but I was called to start my EPP drug trials, which put the trip on hold for the time being. So when Brandon found out about a year ago that he would be going to the Portland State University to present his research from his graduate work we decided to make it a trip and we have been on countdown every since!!

Before starting our trip we got up early this morning to get all the puppies to their designated homes while we are gone on the trip. This is the hardest part for me! I hate leaving my puppies - especially for this long of a time! (By the way....thanks to everyone who is dog sitting for us! I know they are in good hands and being spoiled rotten!) Also, before our trip Brandon took a ton of time to create my "cave" in the back seat of the truck so that I would not have to worry about dodging the sun during our drives! How wonderful is he! :o) With all of that done and our bags packed it was officially time to burn some highway!

Bran was nice and let me catch up on some sleep during this drive since the scenery isn't much to really brag about...and boy did I need it! Thanks baby puppy! We made a few stops on our way to Yuma, one being in Arizona to visit "The Thing!?!" Don't ask - we'll never tell what it is :o) Otherwise this leg of the journey was hot, dry, and not much to brag about!!

So...with our big trip across America planned we decided to blog about all the things we are getting to see and do so that you all back at home can keep up with us! We decided that we would also take "mile pictures." These are going to be pictures that will be taken at different milage points on the trip. Along with those pictures I will also post a few pics taken that day! We hope you enjoy our adventure as much as we plan to!

Just so everyone knows Brandon and I are still alive! Since school has started we have both been going full blast! There are not enough hours in the day! I am up at 4AM every morning, work at 5:15 until 3 (on a good day) and then head home to try and fit in a work out,cook dinner, do homework, and do all the "house stuff" while trying to get to bed at a decent hour since I have to be up at 4AM! Poor Brandon has some 12-13 hour days! Along with his job as a biologist/chemist at the lab, he is also doing his diabetes research for grad school and thesis, and is also a biology instructor for the university! Looking back at the college years I don't see how I ever had time for school, full time job, and going out every night with friends! I just want to let everyone know that we still love you, and I am sorry if we make you schedule an appointment to hang out with us! :o) Brandon will see you in December 2010 and I will see you in December 2011!

Well gang this is probably the worlds longest post - but I had tons that I needed to blog about! It was a crazy July!!

WE SHALL CALL HIM....PJ!

A few Sundays back after a long day of doing yard work Brandon and I were relaxing in the living room when the dogs started going crazy at the front door. Brandon got up to see what the commotion was about and guess what we saw? A cat! We opened the door to check him out and see what his situation was and he marched right in our house and went and plopped down on the couch! RIDICULOUS!! So yeah we kept him! He has the best personality, he is so "whatever!" He reminds me of my cat growing up, he acts more like a dog rather than a cat. He LOVES to talk and is a shadow wherever you go! We watched around the neighborhood for signs and in the newspaper to see if anyone was looking for their pet, but there were none to be found - so he is officially part of the Hawkins!! We were going to the vet to get him fixed and de-clawed, but he has already had his man parts removed! Yeah one less thing! He is now scheduled to have his deadly sharp claws removed next week! Welcome to the fam PJ! :o)

I think I am going to officially make this couch mine :o)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

I celebrated my 28th birthday a few weeks ago and got to have a 4 day celebration! Man, am I a lucky girl or what! Here is what events occurred over those 4days....

THURSDAY: My actual birthday! When I woke up that morning it was pouring rain! The streets were SUPER flooded so my hubby was nice enough to get out of bed at 4:45 AM to take me to work so I wouldn't have to wade across the Illinois river! When I walked into work I had the prettiest flowers from the girls I work with! For lunch we had Jason's Deli and then for dessert Morgan made this AWESOME cake! It was so yummy! Cameron, Rach, Morgan, Diane, Sally, Tammy, Maria, and Hali all got me great gifts and made my birthday work day super special! That evening we met my family at Luigi's (my fav) for my birthday dinner! The food was fantastic and I got some amazing gifts from my family! I am such a lucky girl! I am saving up for a new camera and I got lots of gift cards and cash to go towards the big purchase! Thanks guys! The highlight of the evening was my birthday cake that Nana and Terrie made me! It was pretty much AMAZING! They did an awesome job! If you know me the cake pretty much speaks for itself! This thing was HUGE and seriously probably weighed a good 30 pounds! It looked so real! Nana got kind of embarrassed about it, but everyone in Luigi's thought it was a hoot! It was an awesome cake that tasted yummy! You girls have ALOT to live up to next year! After Luigi's we headed to Sedona Grill to hang out on the patio before turning in for the night!

FRIDAY: We went to Murray's for dinner with Rach, TJ, and my favorite muchcans - Fro-Mama and Muffin Man! They gave me the gift they "made!" Abby was so excited to give it to me! SUNDAY: My dads company always sponsors a theater production and so me and a bunch of our friends headed to the theater to see Footloose! They did a fantastic job! One of the best shows that I have seen! I love the theater! If you have never been to the theater in Midland you should definetly go - they do a great job!

By the time Sunday night came around we were all pretty pooped from the rowdy weekend! Thanks to all my family and friends for the best birthday ever! You guys rock my socks!

THE ADEVNTURES OF FRO-MAMA!!

Well one Friday in July while fro-mama was staying with us while her parents were out of town we decided to load the car up and take a trip to the Fort Worth Zoo! This was Abby's first big car ride, first time to stay in a hotel, first time to swim in a "BIG" pool, first time to go to the zoo, and first time to be away from her parents this long...all of this while we are potty training of course!

The car ride there was great! We only had to stop and potty once! She was such a big girl! She kept herself occupied with books, jammin' to Taylor Swift, and of course the popcorn Brandon's Nana made her for the trip! But as you can tell a car ride and popcorn can make a girl sleepy.....

When we got into the Dallas area we checked into our hotel and immediately went to check out the pool! She was sooooo excited about swimming, but first we needed to go get some grub in our hungry belly's so off to Saltgrass we went! The food was yummy as usual! What are we waiting for!?!

Once we got back to the hotel and gave our food a chance to settle it was off to the pool we went! Fro Mama was FEARLESS! She just jumped right in! We started out with floaties, but once she learned that she could move a little easier in the water without them, we ditched those bad boys! Brandon and I were so proud of her! After a few hours in the pool it was time to scrub a dub and get read for our zoo adventure the next day!

This is what I'm talkin' 'bout :o)

On Saturday morning we woke up and got ready to go to the Fort Worth Zoo! Brandon, myself, and her parents had been talking about the zoo with her for the past couple of weeks and practicing all the animals and there noises, so she was roarin' and ready to go! Before heading to the zoo we stopped and had breakfast at Chick-fill-a! Yum! Once we got to the zoo we went and explored every animal and took lots of pictures! She loved it! She even got to feed the birds and pet some animals (which is quite unusual for her to want to do!) We spent almost 5 hours at the zoo and she did AWESOME! We didn't even have any potty accidents! Woo Hoo! What was so funny is that she wanted to be in the exact area where the animals were, so we would catch her trying to climb up the fence to "get in there with them!" After sweating at the zoo and so much adventure it was time to head back to the hotel for a nap! She feel asleep in about 2.5 seconds once we got in the car and hit the road! She was trying so hard to be big girl and re-live all the animals and the noises they make, but nap time won!

After heading back to the hotel and taking a nap we went to have dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse! Fro Mama was still a little pooped from the day and did not have much of an appetite so we decided to skip out on the pool and hang out in the room after dinner and head to bed a little early for the ride home!

We got up Sunday morning and packed our bags to head back to Midland! We had to make a pit stop to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Connor! Once we got there everyone was swimming which meant Abby had to swim too! We stayed and splished and splashed for an hour or so and then hit the road to eat some lunch and head back to Midland!

Once we got to Midland we went to drop her off at home to her parents and have dinner and look at all the pictures and videos! We also had no potty accidents the entire trip! Rock on sista! We had a blast! I think we had more fun going to the zoo with Abby than if we had gone by ourselves! It was so exciting to see her experience something "new" and fun! I will forever cherish the memories and adventures that we had with our Fro Mama! So I guess this means when Muffin Man turns 2 he is taking a trip to the zoo which his Aunt Jess and Uncle Brandon! :o)

LoTs Of NeWs!!!!

Well the Hawkins household has LOTS of good news I just have not had the chance to blog about it all! So here we go!!!!

1. Brandon's patho report came back and it was a BENIGN Angiolipoma! Thank you Jesus! :o) Thank you all for all your prays and thoughts! We did the right thing by just having the excisional biopsy, instead of just a plain 'ole biopsy because this type of lipoma is very fast growing and aggressive! B had his staples removed this past Friday and his incision is healing marvelously! He still has some discomfort just because of how deep the wound was and from "digging" the mass out, but he is a tough cookie and not slowing down a bit!

2. I got a promotion at work! Yeah for me! I am now the BIG CHEESE of all pre-operative services at MMH! I basically have been doing the requirements of the job for a while, but never had the "title." I have A LOT of hard work a head of me, but I am very passionate about my job so I look forward to the challenge! :o)

3. I also got into Grad school at Texas Tech! I was pretty nervous about it, but I got my letter of acceptance in the mail and start classes in the Fall! I'm a little nervous / scared due to the fact I have not been a "student" in six years! New position at work + starting grad school = LOTS OF STRESS!!! :o)

4. We got to spend time with some of our friends and favorite munchcan Fro-mama this past weekend! We all took her to a Rockhounds baseball game and had a blast! She did such a good job! Brandon and I are excited because we are taking her to Ft. Worth this weekend to go to the zoo and aquarium! She has never been so we are looking forward to the fun times we are all going to have! We get to keep her starting Wednesday night and return her to mom and dad on Sunday evening! I think we may have a tired little puppy on our hands! I am also so proud of her because she is now officially using the P-O-T-T-Y! Yeah Fro- Mama!!!

5. Roxi loves her some Frisbee and has learned to throw her own Frisbee and catch it! Ridiculous I know! :o) And it's not like we don't throw it for her a million times a day! The most hilarious thing is that she got the Frisbee stuck on her head!!! HILARIOUS! She makes me laugh.... She has also been stung by wasps twice this week on the nose! Poor baby she was not even bothering them - they just attacked her! So we have had to give her Benadryl 2 nights in a row now and watch our druggie dog rub her nose with her paw because it bothers her. She sad / cute/ funny all at the same time! But don't worry - she is a-ok and I think we finally got rid of all the wasps! :o)

Well the surgery is over and Brandon is doing great! Brandon had the "A" team for surgery today! Everyone at the hospital was just amazing! I love my hospital family! They made sure that from start to finish Brandon was well taken care of - I did not have to worry much because I knew he was in the best hands from surgeon, to anesthesia, to OR nurse! Thanks everyone for being so AWESOME to my hubby!

They ended up just doing moderate sedation with a local to the area, which I was glad because it made recovery a little easier! :o) The surgery took about 45 minutes. Dr Deme and Mike (his AWESOME PA) said that they had to do a lot of digging to get the tumor out! But they did a great job! Ron Cotton (the best CRNA in the universe!) came out to get me after the procedure was over and Brandon was already sitting up on the stretcher smiling and shooting the bull with everyone! They saved the tumor for me to see before they sent it off - it is bigger than I was thinking it was going to be! It is a little big bigger than a golf ball. ( I attached a pic - if you get qweezy by looking at that kind of stuff DON'T LOOK!) The tumor is being sent off for biopsy and we should know the verdict in a couple of weeks! So keep praying! :o)

After surgery Brandon went down stairs to the Ortho Center (where I work) to his two other nursing wives (Rach and Morgan) who got him recovered and spoiled him! Rachelle even got to give him a free wax job! :o) We left the hospital around 9:45 and then stopped to pick up pain meds. Brandon has been pretty sore this afternoon, so I have been keeping the pain meds on board. It is just hard for him to get comfortable because it is right on the spot of your back where pressure is placed if you sitting up in a chair or laying down. But he is being a trooper and I am so glad everything went smooth today! Thanks to everyone for all the prayers and thoughts! We have had lots of visitors, calls, and care packages! We have the best friends and family anyone could ask for! Also a HUGE THANKS to my MMH hospital family - you guys are the greatest!

Well Bran goes to get "Larry" the lipoma (yes, we named it! - we try to make the best of every situation!) removed on Thursday at 5:45 am. It will a same day surgery where they go in and remove the mass and then send it off to make sure that it is benign! Please continue to pray for my Brandon! We appreciate all the love and prayers! Hope everyone is having a great start of the week!

MRI Results

Well we went to see the doc today about the MRI results. The mass on Brandon's spine is a lipoma. Typically you would not be too concerned with just having a lipoma, but because Brandon's has grown significantly in size over a short period of time the doc wants to go ahead and do an excisional biopsy (surgery to take out the lipoma). Once the lipoma is removed they will do a biopsy to determine whether is benign or not. From the MRI was also found out that he has a herniated disc and quite possibly a kidney stone that he may have to pass (poor guy!) Hopefully surgery will be early next week. Dr Deme is a wonderful surgeon and I would not want Brandon in anyone else's hands! Please continue to pray for Brandon and good outcomes! Love you guys!

About 6 months ago Brandon developed a small "knot" in the middle of his back right over his spine. We did not think much off it because he typically gets "knots" in his back from stress that I have to rub out so we thought this was no different. Well it is definitely different, and not that kind of "knot." He now has a large mass over his thoracic spine that is just getting larger. He is beginning to have increasingly worse back pain, with pain down his right leg. After I finally talked him into it we headed straight to the neurosurgeon (hes the man that DOES NOT like to go to the doctor), who ordered a MRI. Brandon went for the MRI today and it is definitely some type of tumor. We are unsure what type of tumor, and we won't find out until we see the doctor on Friday (it's only Monday...this is going to be the longest week ever). I am guessing that a biopsy is going to be the next step - but I'm not the doctor :o) So please keep Brandon in your prayers. We know that he will likely need surgery to remove the mass, we just don't want it to be anything malignant. I know I just have to trust in God that everything is going to be ok. But I also know the power of prayer can do miraculous things. I will keep everyone posted as soon as we get answers or find out what the next step to take is.

Pecos Wilderness = bad luck!

Brandon had this Pecos Wilderness trip planned for months and has been pumped about it for twice as long! This trip was part of his graduation gift! It consisted of Brandon and 3 other guys (Jeremiah, Stu, and Mike), along with our dog Roxi going into the Pecos Wilderness (located along the New Mexico / Colorado border) for 6 days to rough it in the wild! They all had been working for weeks to get there packs as light as possible and preparing for every situation that might arise! :o) They left out of town early Friday morning, going to a place with no cell phone reception and tons of bears! This is not a good situation for a wife to be in! Everyone made safe but they came against a few obstacles once they got there! First of all it was raining and freezing, which was no big deal because they were all prepared. It did become a big deal once one of the guys fell in the just about freezing river! Here is the list of other things that happened...

While using his knife to separate fire sticks, Jeremiah cut the top of his thumb off. Brandon pushed it back in place and put a pressure dressing over it that had to be changed every hour because of the bleeding. But I have good news - thumb is ok today!

Once the fire was started the boys had there clothes in the area to help dry them. All of a sudden Jeremiah's hiking boot fell into the flames and the sole of his hiking boot was completely burnt off! Hard to hike in 1 hiking boot.

While getting wood for this fire our crackhead dog Roxi went racing through the guys and sliced her ear all up in 3 places due to walking right into an axe that one of the guys was carrying at his side. Brandon said she did not cry or act like anything happened. Her ear is healed, but it looks like she has a couple of ears on one side. We call it her battle wound....

Over the course of 2 days they went through a monsoon, tons of rain, hail, and snow!

Brandon could not get poor Roxi dry enough at night and she was just about freezing! You know if that dog is cold...its cold!

So thankfully the guys all decided to head back home. They did not get very far in their 50 mile hike before having to turn back. Brandon and Stu are bound and determined to head back that way and finish the hike. No Roxi this time though....

Brandon said Roxi was very "motherly" she would walk ahead of the guys to check out the trail and then turn and wait until she saw the four of them to make sure they were ok before going any further! What a good girl!

Well Brandon and Stu were just so sad about not being able to finish their trip, so they decided to spend a few days at Big Bend (Brandon's second home!) They discovered a cool cave area on the side of the mountain, and even came across a mama bear with her 2 cubs! They are so cute!

I have been pretty stressed with work lately, and I know I am probably not that joyous to be around....but my hubby puts up with it all somehow! He is just the best! Today after my haircut (which I desperately needed) he surprised me with some new earrings I have been wanting from James Avery and a trip to Luigi's for dinner! He even wrote me the sweetest card ever (made me cry)! Totally made my day! How did I ever get so lucky!! I love you Brandon! :o)

The March of Dimes walk was a huge success! We raised almost $1900 between Rach, Tana, & myself! We pretty much rock! Tons of people turned out for the walk although the weather was kind of icky! Well he finally did it! After years of set backs, bumps in the road, putting me before himself Brandon graduated with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry! They all know how hard he has worked to get to where is he today and are all so proud of him! After Murrays we all headed over to The Hemmingway for a few cigars and some yummy wine! It has been forever and a decade since we have been to Carlsbad Caverns , so we all decided to take a little family trip to go check them out! They are so much cooler than I remember! We all had a blast! This was Beeler's first time at the Caverns so it made the trip extra fun! After traveling through the caverns we had some extra time before the bat flight so we decided to head down to Sitting Bull Falls to check it out! It was beautiful! (Even in the rain!) I think I got a concussion from a tree branch (stupid tree) but we had fun being adventurous in the rain! We did not get the see the bats fly out of the cave that night...the bats decided it was too chilly and rainy! But me and my sister started a new club...The Bitty Bat Club! You pretty much have to be really cool to get in this club! We now have super powers..... :o)

I HATE PAINTING BRICK!

And that's all I have to say about that! Went to Lowe's this morning and spent $10 on a special roller that is supposed to help with really rough textured brick....for those of you who know me I am cheap and have a really hard time spending that much dinero on a roller - but if it works it will be so worth every dollar spent! Just to put it in perspective - it took me 6 hours to prime the brick yesterday! Ahhh! But the sun room will be finished today! Yay!

Well I just noticed that I have not updated on the Casa de Hawkins progress in the sun room at kitchen! We got the tile floors done that same week! Yeah! They took a little longer than expected, not because it is hard, its just so darn time consuming! The floors look AWESOME and we are super proud of ourselves! I am sooooooo excited because I am off of work for the rest of the week! (Thank you Jesus! I was about to have a meltdown and go insane!) So this week I plan on painting the two rooms, finishing baseboards, and all that other fun stuff! My mom has graciously volunteered to help me paint so I should get it knocked out in no time! Sunday started day number one of the sun room & kitchen floor remodel! Saturday we went and got all the necessary supplies and yesterday started tearing things up! I love the demolition part of home remodeling! (Maybe not this one so much...) Once we got everything moved out of the 2 rooms (tons of heavy furniture - I'm going to be soooo sore!) we figured the indoor / outdoor carpet in the sun room could be pulled up in a jiffy......NOT! Every centimeter of that carpet was glued down by some super power glue and it took almost 2 hours to get it pulled off the concrete! Bran and I have both been a little under weather and neither one of us have super strength at this time and so it wiped us both out! But yeah we finally got it done!

The kitchen flooring was another monster! The previous owners put industrial strength linoleum on top of the homes 1950 linoleum and that was a booger to get up! Once we got half way through pulling up the kitchen floor Brandon and I looked at each other and said "what have we done!?!" Once we finally got all the linoleum up - we had to start scraping up the glue that has been there for over 50 years! So off to Lowes we go to buy floor scrapers! Thank goodness my wonderful bro-in-law Beeler volunteered to help! We all ended up with blisters on the palms of our hands (those hurt!) but we got all the glue up! Thank goodness it was not as bad as I was picturing it was going to be! The floors in both rooms have been all cleaned up and will have tile placed on top of them today! Woo hoo! I woke up SOOOOO sore this morning! It was a little hard to get moving! Here's to another hard day of home remodeling!

Roxi La Rue turns 1!!

Our Roxi La Rue turned the big 1 year old this past Saturday! Sometimes we forget that she is still a baby because she acts so grown up! Now, don't get me wrong she still goes into crackhead mode - but overall she acts like she is a big girl!! We celebrated by cooking out steaks! YUMMY! The puppies got to have a spacial treat, beef stew something, mixed in with their food! They gobbled it up super fast! And for the birthday girl (and the other 2 puppies) I made carrot & peanut butter cupcakes with cream cheese frosting! YUMMY! (Don't worry it is all puppy safe!) They L-O-V-E-D the cupcakes! They were gone in no time! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROXI!!! We love you bunches!!! :o)

Fat Saturday at Murray's!

Last weekend was Fat Saturdays at Murray's and it was a BLAST! We both had had a pretty rough week and so we were looking sooooo forward to good seafood, drinks, and time with friends! I also had a wreck in our 1 vehicle that we have right now! Brandon's new, but old 79 Jeep is getting a makeover, and I wrecked the Honda! Just my luck! To make things worse I hit a cop (he was in his personal vehicle, but that's beside the point!) Thank goodness it is still drivable or we would be in a dill pickle!

So by Saturday night we were ready to tear up Murray's! We had a BLAST and had over 35 people in our group show up! We all laughed so hard I think we added 10 years to our lives! Instead of boobie flashing, we did boobie grabbing - we just had to honor the spirit of Mardi Gras! Afterwards we all headed out to The Bar to hang out and continue are night of fun! I have figured out that I am definitely getting old! It was hard to get moving on Sunday! How did I use to do this almost every night?!?! Into the wilderness!

Friday morning Brandon, me & the pups all headed to the Lincoln National Forest outside Cloudcroft, NM for some camping, hiking, and big adventures! The puppies were so excited to get in the car and head out of town....they love traveling! Maggie gets so excited she can't contain herself! (see video below) Brew man just chills on the console in the middle of the two front seat or in his tent that he makes out of blankets in the backseat! Roxi is hilarious! If she was a kid she would be the one that keeps asking "are we there yet!?!" After a few hours in the car she gets board and tries to fit up in the back seat window! HILARIOUS!

Maggie is SOOOO excited!

Once we arrived we got out to find a place to set up camp! It was so beautiful there! There was snow on the ground so we needed to try to find a flat dry spot with some trees to block the breeze to set up camp! We found the perfect spot...but man carrying all of our stuff up and down the mountain where are camp was was killer! (Maybe we should not bring so much stuff next time!) Altitude sucks the life out of you! We stayed at an altitude of about 8500 feet. After everything was brought up to set up camp Bran put the tent together and I went around and gathered wood for the fire! It was about 43 degrees while we were setting up camp - just perfect! :o)

After camp was set up and a few rounds of romping around with the puppies we went and put on our layers before the sun went down so that we would not get cold! The low Friday night was supposed to be about 18! But we were not worried because we came prepared! I think I had on 30 layers, but at least I was warm and toasty! Roxi played in the snow all night! She loved it! All the puppies got to roam free and explore everything! I think they were in puppy paradise! Friday night we had bear burgers with jalapeno poppers and Bushes beans! It was yummy! The puppies even got to split a bear burger! We stayed by the fire relaxing for the rest of the night enjoying all the sights and sounds around us while we drank our hot chocolate! It was so peaceful! I think you could see every star in the sky where we were at! Just beautiful! Roxi we found out is a pyro and obsessed with fire! I am surprised she still has hair on her tail - she almost burnt it off a million times! She is not afraid of anything - crazy girl!

That night when we finally headed to bed the water in the dogs bowl that was setting outside was already starting to freeze! Brrrrr! We all got bundled up in our sleeping bags - Brewster slept with me, Maggie with Brandon, and we made Roxi a comfy bed. She does not like to sleep in close quarters with people - she gets too hot! Brandon slept with his gun by our bed just in case we got some late night visitors from the wilderness! We were awakened a few times that night by the howling of coyotes! It was kind of a bone chilling sound because of how it echos through the mountains and trees! And then 4am hit and we all had to pee like a mad people! Which means I had to head outside in the 18 degree weather (according to Brandon's watch) pull down all my layers and expose my butt to that cold air! Thanks goodness it was not as bad as I had imagined it to be! I had a cold booty, but not too bad! We all went back to sleep until about 7 am and then got up to start the day to an even colder temperature! Roxi actually got cold that morning and woke us up! So if Roxi got cold - you can just imagine how cold it was!

Bran was the first out of the tent to start the fire to get us warm and cook breakfast! He made us some yummy breakfast burritos that we all gobbled down! After breakfast Roxi & Maggie joined me and we went and washed dishes in the snow! Once camp was all cleaned up and we were all changed we headed out to explore and hike! This was the view from our tent Saturday morning.....

We walked through pretty much everything during our hike- dry land, snow, water, mud! Poor Brew and Maggie had little icicles hanging off of their tummy - but believe me and it did not slow them down! Roxi was all over the place! She was in puppy heaven! We saw lots of animal tracks in the snow! The puppies even caught a mole - it was hilarious! (see video below) During our hike we also came across an elk carcase. We are thinking that this is what the coyotes were howling about the night before because it appeared that it had just been freshly eaten! We thought it was pretty cool and took some funny pics with it! (I know some may think we are demented - this is what happens when you work in the medical field! :o) Bran and I also made a Man vs Wild video! Pretty hilarious - but only funny if you have seen Bear in that show! Poor elk! Brandon got to try out his new day hike backpack and loved it! He gave it 2 thumbs up! We hiked and explored for a good 4 hours and then headed back to camp to relax and take a little nap. The puppies were exhausted!! I don't think I have ever seen any of them that tired! They immediately found sun to dry themselves off and fell asleep! We all then moved into the tent to take a little nap, and woke up to the sound of some crazy blowing wind! After noticing that the wind was not dying down after a few hours and the temperature dropping significantly (it was pretty much freezing outside) we decided that we would go ahead and head home instead of staying another night! We decided not to stay because we were not going to able to start a fire to keep warm (due to high fire danger and the high blowing winds), and we did not just want to be trapped in the tent all evening and night freezing! We also knew that they were expecting a cold front, so we did not want to get trapped in snow in the Honda - not good! So we loaded everything up and headed back home! The puppies snored the whole way home! It was so cute to see them all snuggling in the back seat! We were all pretty stinky though so it felt good to take a shower when we got back! The puppies had to sleep in the sun room until I could give them bathes today because they were filthy!

So today has been spent unpacking and scrubbing the puppies! They were soooooo dirty! After everyones baths they all spread through the house snoozing away! Count Your Blessings!

From my daily devotional......

I will be the first to say that I am guilty of focusing on all the troubles and obstacles in life instead of counting all the blessings that I have around me each and every day! In all honesty I think sometimes we are so busy adding up our troubles that we forget to count our blessings! This got me to thinking about who and what I am thankful for....

1. My amazing husband who is my rock! He is my best friend and soul mate! I am so thankful that God blessed me with such an wonderful person to make my way through this crazy life with! Each day he inspires me to push myself to be all that he knows I can be! It is the best feeling to wake up every morning next to the person who makes you the happiest! His dedication and passion for life and God is contagious and that is one of the things I love most about him!

2. My wonderful puppies! Brandon and I don't have children, and really have not made the decision whether we are going to or not due to the risks. This is a something we have just had to turn completely over to God and put in his hands! So because of this I am thankful to be a mom to the best puppies in the universe! They are always thankful for the little things you do and love you unconditionally - even on the worst of days! I know alot of people make fun of me because I treat and talk about my puppies like kids, but that is exactly what they are to me - my kids!

3. My wonderful parents who I am lucky enough to have! They are parents that would go to the moon and back for me if I needed them to! I am thankful for the love and support they have given me through my life! I can only hope that through all their hard work and dedication that I am a daughter they can be proud of! I wish all children were blessed with such great parents!

4. My marvelous sister who has amazed me as she has grown up to become such an astounding young woman! Although it makes me sad that I don't get to talk to her as much as I used to because we are both so busy "living life," I know that she is forever there for me! We have the kind of bond where we can just pick up where we left off! I am thankful that God blessed her with a wonderful husband to live her life with!

5. My extended family who has taken me into their family with open arms since the day Brandon and I met! They are the best "in laws" a girl could ask for! Their unconditional love and support for Brandon and me is endless! I have loved and enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about them and grow closer to them each and everyday!

6. I have the best friends anyone could ask for! Words can not even describe how great my friends are! There isn't enough room to upload pictures of everyone who has been a great friend to me! :o)

7. Our house! Although it seems like it has been under construction for FOREVER (which I tend to complain about alot!) I am thankful to have my own home to share with my family and our wonderful "grandma and grandpa" neighbors who have the most amazing stories!

8. My profession! I absolutely LOVE being a nurse! It is definitely my calling in life! Having the opportunity to wake up each day and help and have an impact on another persons life is one of the best feelings ever! I can only hope that I have had a positive influence in the lives of each of my patients, because they have all touched my life in their own way and made me the nurse and individual I am today!

9. To be an American and live in this great country. I know at the present time our country is going through some hard times, but I believe if we would put God back into the decision making for this country his grace could do endless things!

10. An amazing God who is unfailing. Although I stumble and fall he is always there to pick me up! His grace and mercy is everlasting - I am still learning to put ALL my trust in him...which for some reason is something I battle daily! I think I have trouble "letting go and letting God."

I could go on and on now that I am sitting down and actually thinking about all that I am blessed with! I encourage each of you to sit down and write out what you are thankful for! Here is something to remember... Never start counting your troubles until you've counted at least a hundred of your blessings. By that time, you probably won't think you have troubles!

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.
